Do you feel like an adult?

How many people here are 18-20 and actually feel like an adult? This means you live on your own (Not in a college dorm- that's like summer camp), pay your own health and car insurance. Bought your own car, have a fulltime job that pays well enough to live off of and save, and are completely self sufficient in every facet of life?
Is there a way to do this without being clueless? It seems like nobody ever teaches you what you need to know about life. All anybody in authority over you really cares about up until 18 is your schooling which is mostly high on concept low of practicality stuff like Trig etc. Where in school do they teach you how to do taxes? How about how to manage money properly? It's like you basically have to figure out on your own all this stuff and even if you have parents they won't teach you most of it.

23 years old, rent my own apartment, work as a software developer.
Most of the stuff I need to know I look up on the internet. How to do taxes, how to buy a used car, how to pick insurance -- it's all on the internet.

I understand what you mean.
I'm 20, and I'm not very self-sufficient at all. I realize and accept that I am partially to blame, but I don't think there's any denying that if -anyone- in my life had given me any straightforward guidance on how people get on with all this, I might be a little bit further ahead than I am. I feel pretty lost in trying to get established in any form of independence, and nobody seems to have half a clue how.
Maybe everyone is equally clueless.

i moved out at 18 so i must be an adult HUUUUUUUUUUR.
You're the exact opposite of an adult if you think leaving the family home at 18 qualifies you as an adult.

There is nothing to get. Living life is an art

I'm more of a man than you'll ever be.

He doesn't, but these people do:

I'm 20, I'm unemployed, I've lived alone since I was 18. I still don't cook, I still don't pay all of my bills until I get court letters.
I don't save any money, I spend all of my money on vidya, alcohol, or fast food. Got nothing in my fridge, and my apartment is a pigsty.
So yeah, I don't feel like an adult OP

I'm more of a man than you'll ever be.

Perhaps, and yet you will perish away like men do while I shall reign supreme in a realm you cannot even comprehend.

21, live at home, no car, not in college, only thing I have going for me is a part time job.
I don't know what I'm going to do with my life. I want my own house but what if a water pipe breaks?!! Seems like there's a million different things to deal with once you're on your own. I don't even know how I'll ever afford it to begin with.

I say you can't really call yourself an adult until your self-sufficient. Until then, enjoy being a kid, etc.

I'm 25, rent my house, pay all my bills. It would be cool if I didn't hate my job. I went to school and got a BS and did internships for it though, so I have to do it.

I'm 20, I moved out when I turned 18 and have worked my way though uni thus far no student loans. I don't have a car because I bike everywhere.
I haven't ever done my taxes though, and I really need a dentist appointment.

20, on my second year at university, also working part time, flatting in a house just outside the city with my long-term partner (we split all the bills between us). Live in a country that doesn't require health insurance, owning a car is impractical this close to the city with so much readily available public transportation.
I will feel like an adult when we rent our own place, and pay bills to the utility company directly. This isn't far away for us. Until then I feel like a student.
I learnt what I know by asking everyone what they did. Friends, flatmates, coworkers, everyone wants to tell you the story of how they did things. I believe I gained a lot of life experience by listening to the life experiences of others.
For actual how-to instructions on things like how to cook, how to clean, how to save money etc, the internet.

hi, you're me.

25.. moved out when i was 22.. live in a small 2.5 room appartment working for stihl&co making around 4k a month (lol switzerland) no car..but i spend all my money on other useless stuff

I'm 24. I'll be moving back home soon with my parents. F**k year.

Im 19 and live in my own flat with 2 other girls. I am so not an adult yet.

27
I have a mortgage on a one bedroom apartment.
Own car that I paid for. I pay the insurance.
I do not feel like an adult. I'm not sure what an adult should feel like.

22 yr old male single, never had a gf, moved out once when I was 17 lived with a friend for over a year. Now I live with my Mom. We are poor so I basically help out with bills, electricity, comcast, food and other junk. I feel like a loser cuz I don't drive or don't have a girl in my life. Oh well....

I'm just like you, only a year older so don't feel bad bro.

They don't teach you a damn thing of worth in school. If you learn anything of value, you learn it while the bigger kid has his foot up your ass at lunchtime. And f**k paying your taxes and your insurance and that sh*t too, that's menial bollocks that you could train a monkey to do, that doesn't make you an adult.
Forget everything that every neo-feminist a**hole taught you about being special and valuable, keep your head down and take care of yourself, then you're an adult. It may or may not involve paying taxes.

Word, paying taxes, bills and car insurance dose not make you into an adult. Having a better out look on life and the world around you dose.

Being an adult is a lie.

Dude, that doesn't make you an adult, I know plenty of people who do that, that still act like f**king children.
If you think that makes you an adult then you are a f**king idiot.

Uh it shows that you are responsible enough to hold down a job and organize your finances. It doesn't make me an idiot, I'm just kind of new to being an adult. The point was mostly that we're expected to "be adults" when we havent been given the adequate tools to do so. The age of majority should probably be raised to 21

Replace car with motorcycle and you got me. 18 years old and doing fine. By your definition, yes, I am an adult.
By mine, no. Only means I can afford certain things. Am responsible with money, bust my ass with work, that's all.

True story OP. Being an adult is a lie that "adults" tell you to control you. I'm sure you've heard "You'll understand when you're older." I'm older and I'm realizing more and more how little my parents knew instead of realizing they were smarter than I gave them credit for. I've given adults far too much credit. They don't understand anything better than I did at an early age, they're just more stolid in their views than I ever was. They don't understand "love" better, they just claim they do.
Just because you play for higher stakes as an "adult" doesn't mean you have deeper knowledge of the game in general. People are f**ktarts when they're 16 and they're still f**ktarts when they're 50.

Nice. Someone here got the point of the play.
I'm not waiting around to be an adult. I will be one eventually. For now, I'm going to live my life as best I can.

I don't think there was a point to that play man

21-years-old, but my parents still pay my medical bills and car insurance. I live in an apartment that I pay for on my own. I don't feel bad, because the government tells me that I'm allowed to be a kid until I'm 27.

I've just turned 19 and am about to put my 15k GBP deposit down on a ground floor flat (Move in date set for May 5th). Left home at 17 as an apprentice. Drive a Toyota Avensis work car, health insurance from my employer. Basically, the company I work for replaced what my parents may have paid for.

Britf** here. I'm 19 and still live at home. Don't have a car. And i'm still in college. Why the f**k everyone (mostly americans) feel the need to move out at 18 is beyond me.

I pretty much look up all my sh*t on the internet, getting around without google maps or gps is a pain in the ass.
But yeah, you learn half that sh*t by talking to people. A lot. People don't talk so much just for the hell of it because they can internet instead. So instead of learning how to fix cars and negotiate contracts etc. etc. etc. kids f**k off on myspace these days.
I feel pretty much adult, I've had to do a lot of my own sh*t through trial and error. I will be shipping out to basic training in the US Army soon.
Feels good man.

I'm 23, everything you said, and I barely feel like an adult.

Managing money is easy. They hand you a paycheck once a week or every other week. Spending it simple as well.
The hard part of growing up is controlling your own emotions. Actually, the hard part is recognizing the problem(s) in your life and forcing yourself to solve them. The majority of people don't ever want to be wrong and therefore can't help themselves. Most people spend money as a little pick-me-up medicine.

My parents didn't teach me much, but one of the first classes I ever took was a consumer economics class. It explained everything about monthly budgeting, doing taxes, retirement accounts, how credit works, when it's best to repair/replace durable goods, etc. I don't know if I still have the book, but it was the best class I've ever taken and it counted as college credit.

"Life is simple; you wake up, go to work, take a sh*t, eat 3 good meals a day and you sleep! What's the f**king mysterious?" - George Carlin

There is no "adult".
It's all bullsh*t lie.
If adult is taking responsibility, keeps do them too.
There's young to old, but no "kid" to "adult".
Sorry.

The American version of "becoming an adult" is possibly getting a job, house, wife and kids.
But then again, being an adult is one of those convenience label we like to put on people.

i cant find a job
thats my biggest issue
i've applied to 20+ places and come up with nothing
i want my own place T_T

if you need tax help and life stuff
ask your parents man
no joke
they know. even if you think they're just old useless people.

military = pumped up children who want to play with guns and explosives

I'm a bit late to the party here, but this is one of the greatest posts I've read. Completely agree, these so called "adults" are just people who will answer a question with an answer regardless if they know if their answer has any truth to it.

Joined the Army, basically getting "thrown" into adulthood at 18 (20 now). Administratively, you're entirely on your own after training. F**k I hate doing taxes, and I have a checkbook that I never use.
