I live in Chicago lol. They put a big screen of bulletproof glass in front of the counter with a little slot (sometimes it rotates) at the bottom. They put things that people would likely steal like cigarettes behind the counter, and you have to yell and point at what you want. Then you put your money in the slot and the arab puts your sh*t in the slot and you leave.

wasn't really dangerous, although I don't live in a COMPLETE sh*thole
most crime we got were people coming behind the counter and just taking liquor or cartons of cigs, and then beer runs
although the day after I quit the guy at night got held up at gunpoint (although it turns out he was in on some of the robberies/beer runs and got fired later, LOL!)
