I hit a child while driving and kept going

I know how troll'ish this will probably sound, but at least hear me out on this or just consider this a 'what if'-thread. Please.
I'll just get straight to the point: I was on my way home when I hit a child with my car. My cell went off and as I was fumbling to put it on speaker, I simply lost sight of the road. I definitely wasn't speeding, but I seriously bumped him(her?) and may have ran over him as well, but I'm not sure anymore. In fact, it all happened to so quick that I both froze and panicked at the same time; my mind shut off and I drove away as fast as I could. In the rear-view mirror I saw his buddies and a few adults running towards him.
This happened yesterday and I've been a complete mess since then. I called in sick for work, I left my car in the garage without even seeing if there's any damage and I have yet to sleep. WHAT THE F**K SHOULD I DO? Should I go to the police and tell what happened? What if he's okay, will I still face some serious charges? Wouldn't it have been on the news if he had died? but if they knew it was me, wouldn't I have been arrested yet? Please help me, I don't know what to do anymore

If they knew it was you would've been arrested the same day or at least a few hours ago.
Just take it easy, chances are he broke a leg or something. Read the newspaper and see if there was a hit-and-run with someone dead. They won't even report it if nobody dies or the victim isn't a kid. It's no big deal, sh*t happens and since you didn't do it on purpose you shouldn't feel that bad about it.
However whatever you do don't turn yourself in. Fines, inability to get a job and ruined reputation aren't worth the moral masturbation.

You have done well, but there are many more children out there. Until the streets run red with young blood you will not be done.

Don't tell the cops dumbass. Just try to move on..if you can't get f**ked up with alcohol and weed.

Look...you need to turn yourself in, buddy.
If you think you've got a big problem now, just wait 'till you actually get arrested....

In case you are being honest take this adviceice
It was not your fault, you did nothing wrong other then have a bad gut reaction and drive away, which is completely understandable.
If you want to sleep well and get this off your conscience then go to the police and admit it.

If you go to the cops, you will get into a sh*tload of trouble. Driving away from an accident? After hitting a kid? They'll throw the f**king book at you.
Get rid of the car, hope nobody got your license plate - in the confusion you might have got away with it.
Never drive with a cellphone on. Ever. You probably shouldn't be behind the wheel of a car.

leaving the scene of an accident is illegal
depending if anyone got your license plate, you're f**ked
if all they have is a description of the car you might get away with it
read your local newspapers for the next few days

You have done well, but there are many more children out there. Until the streets run red with young blood you will not be done.

almost lol'd
:)

Was the little sh*ttard playing in the f**king street?
If so, HIS FAULT.

Get rid of the car a couple of towns over, I meant. You don't want anyone recognizing it.

The car has been mentioned the moment the cops showed up. License plate? Partial, if you're unlucky. Either way, that car isn't save to drive anymore; not for a long time.
Enjoy burning it.

Was the little sh*ttard playing in the f**king street?
If so, HIS FAULT.

Was probably running across the street or something, oblivious to traffic

Good job OP, you posted about a hit and run on web.
This will not bode well.

Good job OP, you posted about a hit and run on web.
This will not bode well.

He could be from any country in the entire world, and there are fatal hit-and-runs every minute of every day. This isn't exactly going to give him away.

Drive to the airport.
Fly away?

Was probably running across the street or something, oblivious to traffic

hen f**k em, I was comming home from work DOING 5 MPH WITH 2 CAR LENGTHS BETWEEN ME AND THIS LITTLE FA**OT ON A SPREE SCOOTER WHEN THE LITTLE F**K DIVES INTO ONCOMMING TRAFFIC.
WHO THE F**K DOESNT SUPERVISE THEIR KID.......
oh wait, forgot what country I'm in, TEE HEE.

You should have gone to the cops immediately. If there were other witnesses, they will find you. A hit-and-run is a lot worse than an accident.

You didn't mount the pavement or anything did you?
If the kid was in the road it's a giant f**king idiot to be completely oblivious.
You were at fault though fumbling with your cellphone, but so was the kid by being stupid.

leaving the scene of an accident is illegal
depending if anyone got your license plate, you're f**ked
if all they have is a description of the car you might get away with it
read your local newspapers for the next few days

As long as he turns himself in, it's not really a hit and run. He can say he panicked at the time.
If someone got his plate number and they catch up with him, he's in for a world of hurt.

Actually your fault since you are an adult who is supposed to know better. You are the one driving a giant dangerous hunk of metal. You should have been driving defensively and with full knowledge that the kid might dash out in front of you. The person primarily at fault here is clearly you.

Drive to the airport.
Fly away?

Totally thought of that movie when I read the OP's post.

Don't turn yourself in retard.

Had you stayed and called 911 and they would have gone easy on you. If they catch you now you're f**ked. If you don't want to get caught you've gotta get rid of the car and possibly change your appearance in case someone caught a glimpse of you.

Actually your fault since you are an adult who is supposed to know better. You are the one driving a giant dangerous hunk of metal. You should have been driving defensively and with full knowledge that the kid might dash out in front of you. The person primarily at fault here is clearly you.

If someone throws himself at my car, even if I'm paying full attention to the road, but wouldn't have had time to react. Is it my fault? Some kids are dumbsh*ts running crossing right in front of cars.

Hey think about it this way - if they supervised their kid you'd be f**ked right about now.

>If someone throws himself at my car, even if I'm paying full attention to the road, but wouldn't have had time to react. Is it my fault?
No, but too bad this wasn't the situation the OP was in. The situation the OP was in was not f**king paying attention to the road ahead of him. It's his f**king fault.

If someone throws himself at my car, even if I'm paying full attention to the road, but wouldn't have had time to react. Is it my fault? Some kids are dumbsh*ts running crossing right in front of cars.

You already said you weren't paying full attention to the road.
And if you were paying full attention to the road and managed to hit someone, and then drive off in a panic, you just shouldn't be driving.

op youre a coward, have fun thinking about the child you killed every day from now on

If someone throws himself at my car, even if I'm paying full attention to the road, but wouldn't have had time to react. Is it my fault? Some kids are dumbsh*ts running crossing right in front of cars.

No, it's not your fault, which is why in a situation like that you call the cops immediately. Duh.

Actually your fault since you are an adult who is supposed to know better. You are the one driving a giant dangerous hunk of metal. You should have been driving defensively and with full knowledge that the kid might dash out in front of you. The person primarily at fault here is clearly you.

Youve obviously never driven a car in your life. Oh wait, you must be the one person in the world with super human reflexes who can stop a car the instant some little sh*t runs into the road.
OP, don't turn yourself in. Trash the plates. Sell the car. Buy another car, get another set of plates. Then you're clean.

F**k that sh*t.
When I was a kid, my parents made sure I knew that going on the street is f**king dangerous. You shouldn't be on the street if you're not aware that there are sh*tty drivers like the OP around. You don't randomly walk out in front of a car, and you pay attention to your surroundings at all times. You see a car coming from far away, you get off the road untill it passes. Similar to crossing at a crosswalk, you don't start crossing untill their car has completely stopped, because they can still hit you.
I'm not saying OP is innocent in this, but it's not entirely his fault - the kid and the kid's parents are at fault too.
On a similarly related note, here in Australia we have these things called "school zones" which are basically areas around schools where you have to slow to 40km/h around 30 minutes before and after school starts and finishes. This may sound like a good idea in theory, but it's f**king stupid. Most school zones are in 50km/h zones anyways, but there are school zones on f**king main roads where the limit is anywhere from 70-90km/h. Kids shouldn't be learning that if you cross the Pacific Highway, cars will slow down to 40km/h for you. Not to mention, in school zones, you have to spend more time checking your speed rather than looking at the damn road, because your car can f**king idle past 40km/h by itself if the road has a very slight incline. It's f**king ridiculous, and only tangibly related to OP's post, but I really needed to get that rant out of my system. Thanks for listening.

this happened to me sans cellphone ringing. the dumb f**k just ran out in front of me. i stopped though. i played it off like i was distraught and nothing happened to me. you better learn to fake tears op.

Youve obviously never driven a car in your life. Oh wait, you must be the one person in the world with super human reflexes who can stop a car the instant some little sh*t runs into the road.

>Oh wait, you must be the one person in the world with super human reflexes who can stop a car the instant some little sh*t runs into the road.
Oh gee, let's look at the implicit premises you're operating from:
A) There was only an instant before the child was in the road
B) That drivers should not be keeping an eye out for potential hazards in their environment, like children playing and should slow down/be wary to accommodate
The only way your argument works is if the child was pushed into the road with no warning, or was waiting to jump in front of his f**king car.

Sell your car and buy a new one. Never say anything to anyone.

An hero, or hand yourself in.

F**k that sh*t.

I think no one who is claiming the OP is at fault will deny that the kid and parents are also at fault.

Maybe you shouldn't like, dick around with your phone when you're driving, huh? Sound like a good idea?

What's with all these moral f**s??? Turning yourself in is one of the dumbest things you could do..you'll just end up in prison and in thousand of court cases. If no one saw you then you are fine, if you think someone saw you take your belongings and move on with your life.

THE BEST THING YOU COULD POSSIBLY DO IN THIS SITUATION IS POST ABOUT IT ON web. GOOD WORK

Don't turn yourself in. Got enough money for another car? Buy one. Sell your other car.

He can't really talk to his friends without fear of judgement, or call the radio and ask their opinion. And shrinks carry a hefty fee. Seems like a good thing to do to me.

PAINT your car another way. Get rid of the plates. Try to mod your car to look a little different. Change the style of bumper, maybe put a spoiler on it if it looks semi decent. You can do that, or get rid of the car altogether. Whatever turns you on brother.

dont sell your car, the police will look for that. drive in into a river or something

Same here.
I tried to bring it up with the RTA (Road Transit Authority) and after spending a 30 minute meeting going into detail why school zones aren't a good idea, they basically told me to f**k off. (In a much more polite manner, mind you)
It's obvious why they do it though.
1) Revenue raising. They make tens of thousands of dollars every year, if not hundreds.
2) It makes the government look like they give a sh*t about kids. Even though they do more harm than good, it's what it looks like they're doing that matters.

Keep the car in the garage for weeks, buy or rent a new one for a while.

1) Report your car stolen, say it happened yesterday.
2) Dump car somewhere
3) ????
4) Immune to lawful repurcussions, and PROFIT!!! (from insurance)

No dumbc**t his ip can be tracked from this post. Rather retarded and so is the OP, can't he think on his own or does he always have to ask his life problems to virgin teenagers?

You're gambling either way
Situation A. They saw your plates and they're hunting your ass down. When they find you, they burn your ass in jail for hit and run, deadly assault, failure to report an accident, and reckless driving.
Situation B. You turn yourself in and it defaults to situation A when they never were going to find you anyway
Have it your way
There is also C where you don't do sh*t at all and they never find you

Unless he is in face a terrorist sent here to rid our streets of annoying children.

It was not your fault, you did nothing wrong other then have a bad gut reaction and drive away, which is completely understandable.

OP, make sure you have nothing on your car that proves you ever hit anyone. Make sure you clean your car, firmly. The kid probably didn't die, so don't feel to bad. He will just hate a random dude in a random car. Nobody saw your license plate or your face (or did they?).

I was crossing the crosswalk at a supermarket with my mum when I was 12, and someone f**king REVERSED OVER ME.
HOW THE F**K DID HE MANAGE TO DO THAT?
The c**t didn't even have plates on his car, which is f**king illegal, but that's not the worst part. He turned around, looked straight at me and my mum screaming her head of at him, yelled "oh sh*t" and drove off. He was wearing a beanie and sunglasses too, so the description to the cops was relatively useless. I don't think he was ever found.
If I ever found that a**hole, I would beat the sh*t out of him.
However, I moved on and don't care. It doesn't really affect my life in any way whatsoever other than giving me a good story to tell. Which actually is pretty useful.

Moot doesn't store logfiles.

Okay .. to answer in serious-mode :
They probably know the approximate make/model of the car, but not the plate. They'll tell body shops (and possibly the media) to be on the look-out for anybody with a "whatever color, whatever type" of car with damage to the "whatever".
1. Check your car .. check it good. Most likely you'll be looking for the headlamps, mirrors, etc. to have sustained some damage. If it's cosmetic and/or removable (like the aforementioned parts) .. get replacements ASAP from a junkyard or steal them from another similar car.
2. Check for blood/hair that might have been caught anywhere .. again, pretend you're the cops and you're looking for it.
3. Wash the car down with a high-pressure hose.

If you do ditch the car, do so in a manner that won't trace back to you. Burning it isn't an option (VIN is metal stamped in many places and is connected to the title).
tl;dr : brick on gas, car pointed at lake.

yeah, but the blood on his car would

http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/metropolitan/6957592.html
50% aren't ever identified. Even fewer are arrested.

btw, op : your phone is the piece of evidence that will tie you to the car (approximate location of the cell tower which received your call will place you with ~1km accuracy in a city).

Ironically, yours is just as sh*tty.

that's why it's light hearted

No, after he reversed over me my mum and older brother pulled me out from under the car, and my brother tried to chase after the a**hole, but unfortunately most teenage guys can't outrun cars.

I can't see how he could "drive off" without running over you again or reversing the f**k off, supposing that he couldn't go forward because of your stupid ass, your mother yelling at him, another person/car or something else.

What the f**k is this I dont even im 12 and what is this?

That's Optimus Prime, you dumb sh*t.

this is scary
they're probably getting a subpoena right now

If I was in your situation, these are the things I would do.
1. Take off the tags, anything even remotely identifiable on my car, and then hose it down.
2. Find some way to completely destroy it. I guess you could drive it off a cliff, but where are these magical evidence destroying cliffs that you see in the movies anyway?
3. Don't drive for awhile. Public transportation and walking.

inb4 OP is arrested and everyone here is arrested for aiding a criminal

Put your car in the garage, do something to it so it cannot drive (but you can fix it).
When cops come, tell them its impossible as the car cannot drive atm.

inb4 OP is arrested and everyone here is arrested for aiding a criminal

feds scour the internet for any information on hit and runs, right?
nobody cares.

if they knew it was you they'd have arrested you already.
If you hit someone you can either stop right there and get off lightly or run, if you get caught after you've ran you're f**ked.
You need to get rid of the car. The police will be searching for anyone with your model/colour/make getting parts replaced. First of all you need to clean any blood/fibres then you either need to total it and get it scrapped or leave it somewhere it'd get stolen. Hiding it in the middle of nowhere/burning it out is too suspicious. If you want to keep the car, I'd suggest wrecking it a lot, i.e. drive into a wall or something really hard "by accident", make sure this covers the damage of the hit and run and then get it repaired. If the police investigate it wont look as suspicious.
Think of a decent alibi or something now btw.

OP, you're a moron. This is why driving with cell phones is actually illegal in the country I'm living in - because you F**KING HIT KIDS when you're messing around with them and not paying attention to the road.
And to top it all off, now you're going to be a cowardly prick (again) and not even come forward? They might have gone pretty easy on you had you stopped and called an ambulance immediately, given that the kid DID swerve into traffic, but now it's a hit and run and they'll throw the book at you when they find you.
Enjoy your prison time!

lol
i hit a parked car once, on the street, while driving to ym friends
was cold, window defogger wasnt working, and i was fumbling like a moron
anyway i drove to my friends, got out of the car and looked at the damage and it was like a chunk was taken out of my Civic's front bumper
i thought about not reporting it if the bump was small enough
i just drove back and they were grateful that i 'did hte right thing' and sorted everything out..
OP if this is for real, you should call the police and tell them the street/area that it happened, and all your info, ASAP as you already put yourself in a bad light by waiting
dont even bother reading what others have said, its a waste of your time and will fool your mind even moreso, just confess and get it all overwith

Jigsaw is gonna come after you holmes

Don't f**king do it. Stay where you are. Move on. there's no proof it was you. If they ever do find out, play dumb. No need to waste your life in prison.

Oh man, you are SO in jail...
Not because you hit the child, more because you ran away. If you go to PD RIGHT NOW maybe the ease your penalty.

you won't get caught, that's all i'm saying.

In case you are being honest take this adviceice
It was not your fault, you did nothing wrong other then have a bad gut reaction and drive away, which is completely understandable.
If you want to sleep well and get this off your conscience then go to the police and admit it.

> It was not your fault, you did nothing wrong
bullsh*t.
he should have gotten out of the car and made sure the kid was ok
God you guys are such selfish f**king a**holes

1) Report your car stolen, say it happened yesterday.
2) Dump car somewhere
3) ????
4) Immune to lawful repurcussions, and PROFIT!!! (from insurance)

oh sh*t, THIS. Deffinitely this!

OP, unless you want to seriously be f**ked, turn yourself in. EVERYONE hates hit and run drivers, and a jury WILL nail your c**t to the floor. Turning yourself in will show that you are sorry, and get them to take pity on you.

oh sh*t, THIS. Deffinitely this!

And then the cops wonder why he called in sick to work instead of telling his boss his car got stolen.

Dont go to the cops. Dont believe anyone that tells you cooperating with police will ease your sentence or any of that bullsh*t, most cops want to look like heroes, and that comes from arresting people they make look terrible.

Is the OP still here?

Is the OP still here?

Yes, I'm still here.
Thinking about getting rid of my car, but I'm not yet sure how.

this is scary
they're probably getting a subpoena right now

They can't subpoena the provider for *all* calls in a given area, besides, there's probably at least 3-5 of them, any of which has a legal department that would laugh at an overly broad subpoena like that.
All I'm saying is .. once they find the *car* and tie it to you, they can use the cellphone as evidence you were driving it.

Yes, I'm still here.
Thinking about getting rid of my car, but I'm not yet sure how.

OP : how extensive is the damage? .. is it cosmetic (bumper/mirrors/headlamp) or is there body damage that will require bondo and paint?
Unless you live with your parents, painting a car in the garage isn't terribly difficult. You can get replacement quarter panels for the front from a junkyard or places like certafit (new headlamps, etc. as well) .. but better off at a junkyard because the schlepps at the counter won't know exactly what car they came off of in case they've been watching the news.

What time was it when you hit the kid?

OP don't listen to moralf**s. If you are smart you won't get caught.

I haven't checked it out yet.

What time was it when you hit the kid?

Around 4 PM.

What time was it when you hit the kid?

OP .. don't be specific.
If it was at night, the chances for an ID are even lower .. a lot of colors look alike under streetlamps.
Even if it was broad daylight .. chances are any bystanders were too surprised to get even a partial plate .. if anything, they know the color and maybe the make (like "red 4 door, kinda newish" sort of ID).
If you left parts at the scene (like a mirror/headlamp) they can usually determine a more specific make/model even based on fragments .. but if it's a common car in a common color (say .. white honda civic) then it's literally a needle-in-a-haystack.
Don't play into the hands of the folks that are trying to get you to name specifics so they can go all white-knight-Internet on you.

You should definitely go examine the damage .. having a damaged car in the garage is bad .. but having a damaged car with the victim's hair/blood on it is way worse.
I have 'bumped' other cars in heavy city traffic, even side-to-side .. and not caused any noticeable damage .. if this was in a city neighborhood as you mention, you were probably going pretty slow, and it was likely a glancing blow (ie: you just 'clipped' them) .. it might not have caused any damage at all.

Dont go to the cops. Dont believe anyone that tells you cooperating with police will ease your sentence or any of that bullsh*t, most cops want to look like heroes, and that comes from arresting people they make look terrible.

This, whatever you do don't f**kin tell em.
I seriously doubt anyone saw your face or got your license they were probably too busy checking on the kid, plus you said you drove away fast.
And definitely DO NOT drive your car for a long time, at the very least a month, probably more. Don't try and buy a new one or get it repaired either, but I wouldn't get rid of it, just leave it in the garage.
The only thing I could think of that would f**k you over is if it's on the news or something and someone in your neighborhood recognizes your car, but if the kid is alive and not in a coma or critical condition or something I doubt they'll even mention it. Just keep an eye on the news and the local papers for awhile.
Chances are you'll be fine don't worry about it.

And by the same token .. assuming your garage doesn't have a window (if it does, cover it) .. even if the cops come to your door, DO NOT TALK TO THEM.
Police will need probable cause and a search warrant to enter your garage. If they work out what sort of car it is and there's only 5 of them registered in the city, they might try a "brute force" canvass but that's rather unlikely.
NEVER TALK TO THE POLICE.
NEVER CONSENT TO A SEARCH.
ALWAYS DEMAND YOUR LAWYER.

look bro, if you really fill guilty over this then you owe it to yourself to get some closure. figure out what happened, and if you really want to, take responsibility for it and pay the family's medical bills
