Want to travel, any tips?

Anyone on anonymous gone traveling? I want to see the world but don't know where to start.
What age did you go?
How much money did you have?
How good was your planning? Did you spend 3 days here then move to the next place or just go and went where and when you felt?
Tips, info, anything someone wanting to travel should know?

I have only done this once before.

Related to my interests.
I don't think I have enough money though.

I travel a lot.
If you don't travel often, I'd suggest going to a lot of cities in the US (assuming you're from the US.)
I spent about 4 months in London, about to go for this summer. Eh, don't feel like typing any more.

Ever since seeing those 'where the hell is matt' videos a few years ago I have wanted to go traveling.
Hard to find info on it really. I wouldn't even know where to begin. I guess save up a load of money, have a secret stash thats enough to fly you home from wherever you are in the world, pack your bags and go.
Explore the world until your money runs out then use the secret stash to get you home.

Start small within your state, region, country and then try international.
Don't bring a "travel buddy" unless you want a friend to become a source of constant rage. Seriously.
Leave your hangups about comfort at the door. Be prepared for some sh*tty conditions. I actually prefer it being a bit miserable when I travel. Seems to make the experience much better. It's like the difference between camping and RVing.
(RVs are for fa**ots)

last year at 19 i went to the philippines on my own. i met some friends there a few days later though.
im going again under the same circumstances in about 2 weeks

6 months sailing in the Caribbean. sh*t was quite cash actually.
was like, 13 or something. hurr durr
prob doesnt qualify but w/e wasnt the first time either just the longest time.
f**k yea natural ottermode wasup

just posting because that pic made me smile
carry on

hello fellow anons,
I just wanted to share a few traveling experiences with you. the main thing about traveling is it ultimately depends on your personality and what you are comfortable with while taking into consideration time and money. that's why some people opt to take the really expensive tour and some people get a book or read a website and go it alone.
to share some of my experiences: when i was 20, almost 21 (like 3 years ago) i decided to do the college thing and go to europe. reasons mainly being college i the only time where i could afford to spend 6 weeks being gone (no responsibilities in the summer) and student loans would probably pay for a good trip. i had a lot of friends who did the whole "backpack europe thing" and well I don't know, i figured i should do it to. long story short since i am pretty well versed in sh*t i got a plane ticket, a eurail pass (found out whatever i needed to by asking people, internet) and just went online and booked a hostel and went. when i got there i talked to people, found out what was cool to see and what might not be worth the time, and moved on. everytime i got to a new city i would go online and book a hostel for the next city i wanted to go to. it allowed me to be more flexible and not have to stick to such a tight schedule. but then again im a kinda go with the flow guy.
total it ended up costing me around 3k for 6ish weeks. (im still paying it off and don't regret it)
srsly traveling by yourself is the most awesome self confidence booster that probably exists. when i landed in milan i was so scared, but then just figuring things out and learning "hey i can do this, i can do anything" kinda starts to set in. that's some of my experience. you can ask me anything if you want, i'm gonna stick around this thread for a while.

Let's see...
My Grandparents loved to travel, so by the time I was 15 I had visited all the Eastern Seaboard States excluding Maine as well as PA, and WV.Because of this I have always loved traveling and long car/train rides. (seriously unless you're doing it for business... take a f**king car/train in amerikka) When I was 16 I took a plane to Cali from NYC, spent 2 week at Stanford. Cost like 3k cause it was a special program to study computer programming.
Once I moved to California I tried my best to travel. I had little money so most of it was done using the LA Metro, and Amtrak to like san diego. I drew maps, looked museums and restaurants up, and always made sure to have 20$ for emergencies. My tip for semi-local travel is if it's possible do via metro and bicycle, and draw maps and make a lot of back up plans.

My next trip was to Northern California. I did it Via Amtrak and took 100$ for emergency with me. I spend about 3 months in the summer in Berkeley living with a friend, taking classes, and exploring the bay area. I was 18, and repeated it the next summer. My adviceice is to check out Best Of places, ask cops and Realtors where the bad areas are if you don't have friends.. cause man you don't wanna get lost. Oh wait I forgot.. I spend a weekend up in SOMA in the spring before that summer.. it went sh*tty cause I hadn't planned it, it was a diry bad locale, and my 'boyfriend' ditches me so I slept 3 nights in a hotel alone

My most recent trips were taking amtrak cross country from LAX-NYpenn station. I ended up just getting off for a night and checking out erie. I planned it so I got to spend 9 hours in Chicago to see friends/shower/explore the city. My emergency money for this was 200, and i has another 200 for etc on me each way as well as a credit card each way. The train trip was 3 full days, andon the way back I had my Papa cook for me so I could bring the food w/me on the train.
If you want help planning an Amtrak trip, I can help. Really... do Local, State, Long distance then international as another poster said. My next trip is Vancouver in august :D thought i've been to the canadian sideof niagria falls

I've dreamed of traveling around America for a few years now, but I have no money, no connections, no skills, especially survival skills, so I know I'd just end up dead under a bridge, cold, hungry, and stupid.

Cultures differ so much between states. It's what goes with having a "free" nation, and not a monarchy/oppressive ban-athon.

Hernie,
Sure there are differences been all over in the last 20 years but apparently only 7% of you guys even have passports so how much world view do you really have

Waht free nation
what about the ramrodded healthcare bill doesn't seem much freedom there?

America is far, far more progressive than Europe
I have noticed a lot of European posters in anonymous so I think it's time for a little reality check
Every "progressive" leaning European country has major fascist elements and are founded on barbaric imperialist conquest

Mainstream tourist hotspots are fake, OP.
The less popular countries are amazing.
The people, their way of life etc.
It takes some exploring, but you will know when you've discovered something special.
I have my own spot, I call it home. It's my favorite place on the planet. I should go back this summer.

European views on race and identity are downright medieval and have not improved in the past hundred years

European attempts at progressive domestic policy are downright farcical, non-whites are viewed as subhuman and are ghettoized to the extreme
Europeans have futilely latched on to this uniquely American story to try to seem marginally less insular and out of touch (see pic)

It is a large expansive, incredibly populated country. It's not our fault we can't just take a train and visit 3 countries in one day.

ok first of all I'd like to say that in europe and america we face different issues and to claim one is better than the other is unhelpful and dishonest
but otoh we don't enslave large portions of our minorities via our criminal justice system so,

Number of major fascist parties in the United States: zero.
Number of major fascist parties in Europe: non-zero.
The defense rests.

nope, you just leave them in the ghettos and criminalize the expression their cultural heritages.

Yes, because all of Europe is one big f**king country with one set of laws.

Yes, because all of Europe is one big f**king country with one set of laws.

Racism permeates every facet of European life
While black athletes have excelled in literally every American sport and become global icons, Europeans worship Aryan notions of beauty while even world class nonwhite athletes face nothing but contempt and degradation

Fat obnoxious loud a**holes.
Am i missing anything?

Yes, because all of Europe is one big f**king country with one set of laws.

Yep, that's what the EU is.

European reactions towards American accusations of racism and classism are always met with denial and ridiculous conspiracy theory ideas. Europe is f**king backwards as hell

My Dumb Gay Nationalism is Better than Your Dumb Gay Nationalism. Ftw.

Why the f**k are you guys trying to start a sh*tstorm, this is a decent thread.
On topic - I'm currently planning a trip round the Middle East. Starting in Lebanon, then going to Syria, then catching the train all the way to Iran. After Iran I'll take the ferry to Dubai, then hop across the border to Oman, then fly home. I'll spend some time in each place of course.
Only problem is that it seems like it's going to cost too much, it's run up to 820GBP just on transport and visas - and seeing as my total budget is only 1000GBP, I can't exactly survive on 9 pounds a day if that includes accommodation, food, alcohol, everything.

Europe is so regressive when it comes to race and religion its insane. European "progressives" encourage islamophobia and restrictions on religion and free movement
