Getting a retail job

I was let go for "job abandonment" i.e. not showing up to work for a few days.
It happened during the holiday season, so I wasn't too broken up about it, and just thought, 'AH, whatever, it was just a month-long job, fukkit.
Flash forward five years, and I'm SUPER hard-up for work. Just grabbed a Jo-Ann's application.
Now they ask if you've ever worked there before, but *not* if you've been fired.
So my question is; wat do?
Fill out the form and say yes, I've worked there, and see if they notice if I've been let go for job abandonment, or say no, and risk them finding out.
Anyone know if they check?
Anyone know if getting canned for job abandonment makes you not re-hireable.
At Jo-Ann's ?
Anyone know how other places handle this?

(in b4 kill yourself)

sh*tty low pay retail jobs never check
and you suck ni**er dick

they'll check, that's what computers are for.
they will either say "sorry you've been fired, have a nice day" or they'll ask you and maybe hire you if they're highly desperate. which I think is unlikely.
I'd suggest looking elsewhere unless you've exhausted all other alternatives.

In my employment paperwork, if I stop showing up, I am considered to have voluntarily resigned.
If it was the same for you, answer yes. You wern't fired; you quit.

Yah, but they flat-out told me job abandonment.
Am I screwed?
Also, Jo-Ann's seems pretty sh*t to begin with, like they can't even *keep* people there,
Think they'll even care?

The form specifically does NOT ask if you've ever been fired.

It's your own problem you dilweed. I've worked sh*tty jobs but at least I had the integrity to show up to a commitment. You don't deserve a job. I hope you become a homeless beggar so i can spit on you.

Awww... look at the butthurt little fa**ot. It's so cute you think I care what you have to say...
In any case, it might not matter. Looky what Google turned up...
>Job abondonment is another HR term that means you didn't show up for work or while at work you left. People who do this voluntarily don't show up or leave so you voluntarily terminated; the company did not fire you.
HUZZAH! I'm saved!

Alright, filling out the app now.
I think I can skate by, but looking back, maybe I wasn't the best employee. If the current manager calls the old manager, I'm f**ked.
I guess, I'm gambling on that.
Whether or not she's still working here, and they have her contact info, and whether or not she remembers me. Hopefully she has no clue who I am, and/or nothing was entered into the system.
Hopefully I'm still listed as re-hireable.

If they find out you lost your job for not showing up, they're not going to hire you anyways, so you might as well lie and say you never worked there before. I mean, duh. How stupid are you?
Oh, wait, you're someone who's stupid enough to not only be working retail, but still be working retail five years later.

Alright, I'm back. Turns out the old manager got laid off
(LOL, serves her right, that f**king bitch)
so I'm probably in the clear.

Yeah, but I can explain the job abandonment away during the interview. It's not a deal-killer. Also, the fact that I've worked there before is a positive, even if I left under weird circumstances. They don't want to train an unknown, and gamble on some f**kstick stealing from the registers, punching a customer, etc. They want someone who can hit the ground running.
If I say I've never worked there before, and they find me in the system, then it's a lie, I'm lying on the application, and I'll NEVER be hired.
So basically the question is;
-will they check?
-will something come up in the computer?
-if so, will that bar me from employment?
-will they check with the old manager?
So I'm gambling on whether they even keep records or not, or whether the computers even track that sh*t.
And sh*t, they may not even check at all! In which case I'm home free!
>Oh, wait, you're someone who's stupid enough to not only be working retail, but still be working retail five years later.
Sigh... I wish *I* could still be an overgrown manchild still living in my parent's basement, and not have to worry about getting a pick-up job...
If I get this job I'm gonna laugh *so* hard...

If you live in an at-will state, you should be fine. Just as they don't have to give notice before they fire you, you don't have to give notice before quitting; you can just stop showing up.

F**K YEAH!
Really what it hinges on, is whether or not they'll be able to get ahold of anyone who remembers me, or whether any sort of "flag" is in the computer system.
I doubt it, and I'm feeling positive about the whole thing.

>you can just stop showing up.
Yah, but will that bar them from giving him the job? Sure, "officially" they can't hold it against him, but in reality...
I'd be worried, OP.

some companies will refuse to re-hire you if you don't give them two-weeks notice before you quit.
I worked for Target and they kept f**king me over on my schedule, repeatedly scheduling me during the middle of class. After they did it four weeks in a row, I showed up to work, saw the schedule, and went to my boss and quit.
She tried to sway me, saying "If you quit you won't be able to work for Target again!"
I laughed at her and left.
tl;dr you still may not get the job because of some stupid rule like that

I heard that was a lie. They *can* bar you from re-applying for a few years, unless you punch a customer or steal, in which case, it's permanent.

>some companies will refuse to re-hire you if you don't give them two-weeks notice before you quit.
I think Jo-Ann's needs all the good employees they can get, two week notice or not. That place is like Wal-Mart They might let it slide, if they even catch the OP or not.

It's possible. All of the managers there were really power-hungry. I wanted to remind them they were working at a TARGET...but I didn't want to ruin their ego trip.

That depends on the state; if you are in a "right to work" state you have to give notice. If you are in an "at will" state, you can not be penalized for not giving notice.

I live in an at-will state.
It doesn't matter, I don't intend on working at Target ever again.

I used to work at Sav-On drug store before they got bought by CVS. Whenever someone was fired they put a redflag on their name in the computer system and if a manager tried to hire them it would come up and say not hireable. This was about 4 years ago, they had sh*tty dos based computer systems and they still were able to do this. Don't be so confident.

Okay, but remember, I wasn't fired, I just left. As we now know, it's job abandonment, not being fired.

Don't be so sure, you might find yourself in my shoes someday...

I'll hazard none of them had college degrees, and that job was the best they could get. People like that HATE seeing all the preppy college kids coming in every year, working there just long enough to get their degree.
She probably f**king LOATHED you.

I know at least one of them did, and I have enough job experience now that I could probably get a job elsewhere.
Also, I'm the prime candidate to be ushered into a salary job here at school. (Currently a student employee)

Good on you, but remember, no job is secure, and hard times fall on everyone.
If ever you make friends with a person who works as a manager at target, have them check on it.

I'll consider it. I'd have to find some poor bastard who works for Target though.

They have to be a manager, and have access to the system. And like you enough to check, and also like you enough not to screw you in your current career, since quitting without notice is *super* bad.
Did you leave it off your resume?

I had already completed a job interview for another employer when I quit. On the NEXT (current) job, I did.

How long did you work at that Target?
I know the bitch-ass manager at Jo-Ann screwed me on my reference on the next job I went out for. Luckily, it was just one of those sh*t insurance sales jobs, so it didn't cost me anything.
F**king bitch, I *so* hope the current manager can't get ahold of her...
Your manager might have screwed you over too, although let's hope she's gone now too.
Really the question for both of us is whether or not she left a flag in the system.

typically, business with H.R. depts in the store, or clerical, keeps records for 3 years minimum. that includes terminated employees. after 3 years it's touchy. if it was the holiday they will definitely remember you and not hire you, sorry.
source: i worked in a store level HR position.

I only worked there for about four or five months...during a lunch break at Target I got a call asking for an interview doing IT customer service.
Did the interview, said I'd probably get hired...
Went to Target the next week, saw they dicked me on the schedule, quit.
Went home and checked my email, had a job offer. It worked out pretty nicely.
I've been in IT ever since.

F**K! Oh well, it was five years ago, what are the odds?
Also, if they ditch the records after five years, how do they deal with anger management employees, or employees who steal? Don't those stay active forever? They'd really re-hire someone who punched someone out?
Also, there's no HR dept in the store, just a manager's office. No dedicated HR person, either.
Think there's a flag on my record?

The IT job might not have checked the Target reference. Be careful... if you leave it off from here on out, it might look fishy. Though maybe not, because your resume *should* just be IT from here on out. Just list it as "Miscellaneous Retail" under Additional Experience.
I'm in the same boat. Can't *wait* to get my CompTIA A+ and leave my old life behind...

if it's been 5 years you're good. if there's not a dedicated HR person, I would not list the job history then. if it's a store clerk position of some sort they aren't going to check references. they just want to know you've had experience with basic store stuff and whether they need to train you extra. usually files aren't kept formally for employees who do really 'bad' stuff such as assault or stealing so much as they keep a name on a list. usually stores can just enter a name into a database of retail theft (that is usually kept on a state level), and if you stole you pop up. i don't know about assault. i would assume they just keep a 'do not hire' list. never had experience with that.
but i doubt there is a flag on your record. after five years you could have a billion excuses, ie i was young and sh*t. say you forgot, etc.

I think you're only supposed to leave the past 3 jobs on resumes anyways...so it wouldn't matter anyways.

AWESOME! Thanks dude!
Now when you say:

Do you mean the computer, or the manager? Cuz it's looking like there never was a flag, or if there was, it would have expired by now.
Think they woulda screwed me with a "serious" flag, the one kept at the state level? i.e. was the manager a bitch?
Cuz between me and Target guy, I'm thinking she might really have been that big of a bitch.

A+ doesnt mean sh*t, good luck finding a decent job.
I got mine junior year of highschool, couldn't find anything in the major city near me or in my city.
sh*t sux bro.

No, it had room for a million jobs, there was no way out. I had to either list it, or deny it.
Looks like I made the right choice.
Here's hoping the old manager is un-contactable! *raises glass*

if you didn't steal and get fired for theft then you won't be on the retail theft database. i only say they would remember from the holiday because that was like 3 mos ago. if it's a store usually someone will remember a face. like i said files are typically saved for 3 years, i hardly ever had computer files, it was literally paper files with applications/w9 forms/contracts. we kept a drawer for files from terminated employees for 3 years. after that they were shredded at our leisure.

Nah dude, reread the OP I worked there during the holidays FIVE YEARS AGO.
I'm in the clear!
Thanks for help, though. It is well-appreciated.

Well f**k you too...
The CompTIA *does* mean something, I'm getting blown out on jobs because I *don't* have one, and my degree isn't in Computer Science. My background in QA isn't good enough.
They probably didn't want to take you b/c you were young or something, but the CompTIA isn't useless.

BAMP for the night crew before I turn in.

Dude, you're trash. You should have at least had the decency to quit instead of just cutting all ties, but like I said, you're trash. Maybe after Jo-Ann you can move up to McDonalds. You're still doing minimum wage sh*t after 5 years, well at least you are happy with who you are.

Wow the smugness from some anon still living in his parent's basement is just palpable.
Sorry to destroy your fantasy but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do to make ends meet, until you get the real job,

Please go kill yourself OP, you are useless.
