International flavours of humour

What's your country's humor like?
The British tend to be sarcasm/irony based, sort of back of the hand put downs.
In a word, cynicism.

All the stuff canadians would find funny, except I'm not canadian.

All the stuff canadians would find funny, except I'm not canadian.

I say British, I mean English, we tend to make jokes for our own amusement more than others.

In Belgium it's either male chauvenism, female chauvenism or racism. Go Belgium go!

British but better, with extra deadpan and whimsicality.

Your nation being?

>>British but better, with extra cultural trolling.

Swedish:
Political and abstract

Australian. Our humour is generally pretty offensive.

Irish: Dark (apparently, I did not notice this) and awkward.

In Barbados it's all about innuendo and dirty jokes

>>pretty offensive

Finnish: absurd & crappy <3

Hah, British humour is definitely the best. no question.
Whose Line is it Anyway
Only Fools and Horses
One Foot in the Grave
Blackadder
Red Dwarf
The Brittas Empire
I could name so many more...

American humor!
Uh.
LOL NI**ERS.

I'm not saying Americans don't have a sense of humor, but they don't get the English type
For example, I go into a pizza place in USA, a women there is complaining that she found a grill in with her pizza. THey argue, and when it's my turn I say,
"I'll have a pepperoni, but hold the grill"
They have a fit, saying that it was just a mistake, doesn't normally happen etc. That's just one example.

Am English and was reading a book on English humour and says humour is more important to English culture than any other...it's not saying we're funnier but that all aspects of our culture have some sarcasm, understatement, irony or silliness about it. We have a natural dislike for those who take themselves seriously...I somewhat agree

Almost no non-English people understand English humour. Point-in-case, my mother's Spanish, but my dad's English and I've grown up in England and consider myself English. She completely does not understand certain British comedy shows.
As for American humour... they can hardly say they have a unique sense of humour, because they've exported it all over the world. 'American' humour is the world's humour.

that's not really funny though, just sort of rude. You can't expect some one to laugh when you are basically insulting them.

Not really, they just export more shows, but each culture has more of its own comedy than American. You may take the economy, but you'll never take our humor

THAT'S THE POINT, that's our sense of humor. it wasn't the only situation, just one I remember

brit here, it's humour by our standards....the odd thing about British humour is we walk a fine line between offending someone and having a joke about it. In the UK, that would be jokey if done correctly but I can understand how someone who's not used to that style of humour could see it as offensive or rude

That's a very silly thing to say.
British humor is very silly.
I wish everyone in the world could laugh at themselves like that.

cultural hive-mind

See that fits the explanation of British humour being about not taking anything seriously

American humor is worst humor.
And why cant Americans laugh at themselves?

THAT'S THE POINT, that's our sense of humor. it wasn't the only situation, just one I remember

That is really......lame.
I mean, you say we Americans can't understand it, but, there's nothing there to understand. It's not clever, and it's not original. It's been seen so many times that it's not funny anymore. If a stand up comic were to spill this anecdote no one would laugh. If it were used in a sketch comedy, only the fake recordings of an audience would laugh. There's no actual humor there. It's not that people aren't laughing because they don;t get the joke, it's that they think you are retarded and/or self absorbed, and there's nothing funny about either of those things.

American humor is worst humor.
And why cant Americans laugh at themselves?

Because it's unpatriotic. Americans love them patriots.

Not really, they just export more shows, but each culture has more of its own comedy than American. You may take the economy, but you'll never take our humor

True, but the point I was trying to make is that American can't claim to have it's own style of comedy any more. Other countries can, because they still make their own shows and have plenty of their own comedy hanging around. America exports so much that they don't have any sense of humour that could be considered 'unique'... the entire world gets it.

I don't know that there is a particular type of comedy one could say is "American".
If we're going by popularity I guess you could say Dane Cook takes the cake there, but he's less of a comedian and more of a jester.
Probably one of my favorite American comedians is Mitch Hedberg. On the whole I prefer English humor, though.

f**king hell. Im brit, and it is funny, BUT only in that situation if you were there. It would not be funny on a show/tv etc, that kind of thing requires a different humor type I agree. I really dont know how to describe it. But thehumor is sarcastic and it helps to lighten up situations that are tense by making fun of them. That is our humour and it doen not work well on tv. You have to be there in the situation yourself for it to work.

Nooo.. For example, reciting Monty Python sketches will always be funny (forgot to add them in my earlier list). Maybe not from a stand-up comedian, but in normal social interaction... yes, definitely. Monty Python is like a universal language in Britain, and EVERYONE knows it. If you can fit it naturally into a conversation... yes, that's f**king hilarious.

In NZ we make the same jokes about our 10 politicians

In Soviet Russia humor makes fun of you

I'm from NZ, this is our humor. Simple as f**k, and funny as f**k too.

Agree with the British humour view. It's about being cynical and downgrading and poking fun. Shows like Monty Python are so popular because they're simply silly.
My girlfriend's German, and she doesn't find a lot of what I find funny amusing at all. She goes nuts over slapstick, though. We had this experience the other week:
-Girlfriend opens cupboard, loaf of bread falls out
Girl: Ah hah, look at how messy the cupboard is! The bread just fell out! -laughs
-Her male flatmate and I just stand there staring
Girl: Hah hah hah, it was just like 'plop!' and on the ground because of how messy this all is!
Me and flatmate: ...
Bless her heart.

American humour is stupid, unfunny sh*t.
People sometimes ask me if I'm British

The f**k, man? That is NOT funny.

In Italy we laugh about stereotypes mostly. Someone from the south singing bad songs in bad itlian and acting ignorant? Rich man instantly.

yeah, ok.
I concede that something can be funny in certain situations and not in others, and they way I had read and imagined the anecdote made it not funny.
Also, I love monty python, but I think the thing I find must humorous about the group is their sheer randomness. When something completely unexpected and absurd happens, it gets me every time.

Seriously, this is what you do now: Download all of the Benny Hill series. Watch it with her and she will love you forever. Also Mr. Bean. Germans LOVE Mr Bean.
"He was walking in a straight line and then he fell down! GENIUS!" lol Germans.

In Cyprus we tend to laugh at "naughty" jokes. The more unexpected, the bigger the laugh.
We also have the British humour of using intelligence and quick thinking to get a laugh as well.

Irish: Dark (apparently, I did not notice this) and awkward.

Irish humor is also everywhere, like the UK in a way. It can be very deadpan and clever, but the national broadcaster fails at picking up good comedy completely

What happened next?
Did she invade Poland?
F**king Krauts

If you're dying to know what happened next, no, she did not invade Poland. She put the bread back and got out a knife with which to spread butter on the toast she was making for me.

I laughed because it's true. She thinks that There's Something About Mary is the best thing since sliced bread.

I love Mr Bean. Another classic example of British comedy... sure it's slapstick, but it's another one that's universal. I swear to god, I have never met another Brit who hasn't seen the Mr Bean Xmas special where he gets his head stuck in the turkey.

Dutchf** here. My compatriots primarily enjoy sex jokes. Particularly when they are said in a low voice. And we love it when the guy who cracked the joke laughs about it himself. Oh and racism, lots of racism

Finnish: absurd & crappy <3

Finnish humor tends to be on the dark side, with an absurdist edge, but in Helsinki area jokes are traditionally delivered deadpan and are usually based on irony. Think of British humor and replace wit with depression.

Irish: Dark (apparently, I did not notice this) and awkward.

When I moved to the States, I realised that my humour was as dark and awkward as finding out you gave your mother cancer. Which is odd, because I'm fairly upbeat for Ireland.
Also, ripping the piss out of even your closest friends and loved ones.

Show us some Finnish humour boss.

Germanf** here.
Usual humor: Chav topics, narrative stand-up, blatant misogyny.
It's usually horrible. Some good stuff like "Switch (basically trolling popular shows)".
I prefer British and American stuff like Blackadder, Whitest kids U know, Ricky Gervais.

I'm Italian and that did it for me.
Also, really awkward moments.

There's no such thing as American humor, since there are different sets of humor within different regions, stereotypes, and intelligence levels.

Oh yeah. I consider The IT Crowd to be Irish humour, as are Father Ted and Black Books.

Scottish humour: insults, well timed swearing, very emotive and energetic, surreal
but Im also British, so pretty much what OP said as well
I like to mix the two styles up. I've been told I'm pretty funny i.e. I'd probably stand out amongst my friends as the funny one

People say British humour but it's really just English humour.

I'm Finnish and I like a show called Ketonen & Myllyrinne. It's a sketch show with absurd jokes. I tried to find some Youtube link to an english subbed sketch but there were only a couple and they were sh*tty translations.

brit here, I think Americans have their own sense of humour but for British people it's common to laugh at ourselves at all times but American comedy seems to be exist mostly among stand-up comics, tv shows and so forth
Also, you don't get the Bill Hicks or even Chris Rock stand-up comic in the UK, so I think the US has their own style or sense of humour

Also replace sketch with skit or whatever short comedy acts are called in english.

To sum up, Brit is best.
Along with our music and jacket potatoes.

Spain: anything politically incorrect goes along pretty well. Death, terminal illnesses, terrorism... you name it.

Brit here, in cuisine we are nowhere near the best...any country that invents marmite obviously has less grasp of flavour than what is standard

But you knew that already.

Countries who can laugh about themselves have the best humour.

This is a noble art. Do it right and even the most uptight will appreciate it.

How did this become an American vs Uk thread. Americans and Ukians ruin everything

How did this become an American vs Uk thread. Americans and Ukians ruin everything

it hasn't....we've stated both countries have differences in humour and that UK humour is hard to understand to Americans but easier for UK to understand US because so much is exported

Usaites and Ukians.

Brits= Monte Python= Horrible sense of humor

brit here
I think being a bit silly or too literal and sarcastic suits us
The other day a boyfriend and girlfriend were having an argument and the girlfriend said 'you keep waking up all the time', and I joined in saying 'That's nothing, I wake up every day' and they laughed their heads off...
Likewise, I was in a pub with friends and made them all crouch down with their heads close to the table to tell them something and said 'we're really close to the table' and they loved it. Looking back on it I don't understand why it's funny but it is :S

I'm English and most of the people I know think Monty Python is cringeworthy sh*t.
The worst thing is when people do impressions.

I have to agree with impressions, I can't stand impressionists...when they go on panel shows they always try to slip in an impression of a celebrity or politician and it just isn't funny to me

Ireland prevails.

I also hate HIGNFY - sad old cynics whinging about everything they can. Wish Ian Hislop would perish.

Monty Python isn't really anyone's sense of humor, they were just genius. It's unfair to say that's the British sense of humur though.

Can't really take your knowledge of British humor seriously or even of Monty Python since you can't even spell the name correctly.

I agree completely.
According to TV shows, most comedy is about double meaning words and phrases. Dark sarcasm and GOOD political satire is pretty rare.

For anyone thats interested, heres a NZ ad for pineapple lumps which is sort of the light hearted self-mockery which is quite common here.

Wow that made me laugh out loud. First comment on web to do so in like a year. God, my sense of humour is bad

The reason British people found Monty Python funny was because of the seriousness that a lot of the sketches were done. This might be hard for people to understand but British humor is essentially either insulting or self deprecating at it's core.
The joke of monty python was presenting something extremely silly in an uptight and serious deadpan stereotypically British manner. It's self deprecating at its heart This joke is lost especially on Americans who see it as only slapstick, and can't really imagine someone taking a potshot at themselves or their own culture.
Americans tent to take themselves very seriously and so don't really "get" self deprecating humor and when a British person makes a joke they typically get offended, Like that Pizza guy earlier in the thread.
A humorous exchange in a British pub for example is usually several rounds of trading variously elaborate insults until one person ends up laughing along with the other guys joke, at his own expense. If after several rounds there is no clear winner, then a tiebreaker round is held in the form of a fistfight.
You don't really have this culture in America but it persists in Australia, NZ, And Ireland.

Me and my mates actually do have insult battles. Some of them are really really harsh. It went on for hours, and in the end we all were laughing and wanting to punch each other. There is absolutely no way that would happen in AMerica, even with close friends. They'd expect an "apology" or at least alcohol

It's not the word, it's the whole phrase. I can call someone a 'mate' and there's nothing wrong with that, but starting any sentence with "me and my mates" it's the epitome of chav aka. everything that's wrong with Britain right now.

Mitchell & Webb.
They get me every single time, f**king hilarious.

The f**k, man? That is NOT funny.

Kiwi's are f**king weird.

Don't be so pretentious

I'm not pretentious. I just spend 6-12 hours a day working in A&E seeing drunk morons come in and expect, and receive, free medical care for their own blind stupidity. I see parents who think it's FUNNY that their 14 year old son drank so much vodka and cider he ended up in the ICU. I see teen parents driving drunk, getting in accents, and leaving their children splattered all over the pavement.
YES I f**king hate chavs.

I have to admit, they're my favorites, I'm glad they've done so well, I have a very similar sense of humor to Mitchell.

Not to mention the fact that it should be "I and my mates" or "My mates and I". F**k I HATE when people start a sentence with "Me".

Oh hush you.

Well as much as you, and also I, hate chavs, you can put your mind at ease knowing that the phrase 'me and my mates' is not exclusively used by chavs.

How the f**k does that work?

Me? I use me as an entire sentence posed as a question. Succinct, reaching, a great literary device.

I thought only "my mates and I" was gramatically correct...?
But yes, as a fellow grammar nazi that also gets on my nerves.

I have to admit, they're my favorites, I'm glad they've done so well, I have a very similar sense of humor to Mitchell.

I'm glad they did too. I like to think they make up for other famous english 'funny people' like Lee Evans.

No, it's just more polite to put other people before yourself.

Ugh. I hate Lee Evans. I can kind of understand why he's funny but... no, not a fan.
Izzard and McIntyre, though. That's some quality British stand-up. I'm also rather partial to Dara O'Brien

Ireland is part of the British Isles. Dara O'Briaiiadnainaian is English. To the world at large, Britain = England. Just get used to it.

West Europe seems to have a lot of racism

CO-SIGN
Everything is contextually funny in Australia.

You can see the cultural differences in humour between Americans and Brits by looking at their stand up comedians.
Typically a British comedians act consists of jokes held together within a framework of humorous storys or anecdotes.
Typically an American comedians act is the comedian stating an opinion he has before his audience, who usually share the same opinion as the comedian. Occasionally the American comedian will use observational humour to back up his opinion and if he's wacky/zany he may use a 'funny' voice or props.
Occasionally Americans will use a British style of comedy, which doesn't go down as well in their own country but does travel well internationally and Brits may use American style comedy in their stand up which is usually regarded as a bit lazy and not very funny in Britain but 'a hoot' when they travel to the states. One example of this is Ricky Gervace, he can write decent british comedy (eg Extras and the office) but when he does his stand up act in the UK he is considered OK at best and not really that funny, Americans love it though (so we're told anyway) because it is more their style of humour.
I'm sure most Americans wouldn't find the bit in only fools and horses where Del boy falls through the bar very funny, same as most Brits don't find Chris Rock saying "Obama" over and over again in a funny voice comedy gold.

here's to clear up the irish thing,
note Great BRitain is all of it, and UK isn't

Britf** here, I don't think your distinctions hold up - Eddie Izzard exports well to the states and that's just bizzare rambling.

Apparently French stand-up is sh*t, it's just a man on stage shouting a swear word then grinning inanely as the audience pissed themselves.

Yeah but that's because Eddie Izzard is genuinely hilarious.

You're confusing Great Britain with the British isles.
Great Britain is the main landmass, the British Isles is the whole lot, including Scotland, Wales, ireland, the outer hebrides, Jersey, guernsey etc.

french canadians are retarded too. they actually have different commercials from english canadians just because they have the weirdest, most insane sense of humor ever.

it's in french, but trust me on this one, it doesn't make any more sense if you speak french.

The term "British Isles" has been outdated for quite some time and leads to completely moronic conclusions i.e, Dara O Briain being ENGLISH.

USA: loud and in your face punch lines

There are 6000 or so other Islands in The British isles. But other than that, yeah.
What does everyone think of McIntyre? I think he's classic.

It is, we call it culture, it's like saying your religion or musical taste isn't effected by location.

Big Band Theory or IT Crowd?
Go!
Personally I can't stand BBT, it's just unfunny. Along with How I Met Your Mother, does my head in how people ignore brilliance like Garth Marenghi's Darkplace over these.

I don't care much for comedy at all, though I will say that Peep Show is excellent. Monty Python on the other hand, I believe to be complete sh*t. I don't think it's because I'm American either because I know plenty of people here who love the show. I don't get it at all.

the second series of IT crowd is brilliant, it's more actually nerdy rather than smug , omg nerdz is cool. Same writer as father ted.
Gay the musical is one of my favourite sitcom episodes ever

Well it's not. If not, Scandinavia would be full of goths.

love dat accent

I'm from New York, our jokes are extremely racist towards each other.. for example.. "Damn (Jewish friend's name) you just had to pick up the penny! Now we need to go to the bank." Jewish friend is not offended and laughs. We also make nick names for eachother which are based off a sterotype we fufill. "Yo Fat Mikey how's that diet going?" "It's ok, Joe. We all know it fell off the back of a truck"

There's probably a good reason for that. Taste in humour isn't just defined by culture, but also the way your brain works. There are two main types of humour - interpersonal, and 'random'. Interpersonal relies on a theory of mind, and you understanding relationships between people. Monty Python is a prime example of 'random' comedy... Probably, your brain just isn't wired to find random comedy amusing.
Fun fact: Autisic people don't understand interpersonal humour at all (obviously), however most of them do like Monty Python

I don't really know what defines Norwegian humour, I guess I grew up on American/British TV shows, but I find this pretty funny:

rip canadian comedy.

I've watched some American stand ups. I like Russell Peters, but then after watching them again, they were no longer funny.
Russell Howard all the way <3

i've always wanted to be from a place multicultural enough that i can pull that off, but alas i'm from nova scotia where 90% my friends are of scottish or irish descent, so it sounds weird and racist when i call my black friends nigga and the few jews around get so much sh*t about being jewish that it's not even funny anymore.
the exception being that some of my best friends are iranian or lebanese, so i get away with sand ni**er and leb jokes a lot. my city has a fairly large and distinctive lebanese population so the leb stereotypes are always funny.

Most Americans can't do satire very well, I don't know whether it is because of the culture of litigation out there or that they just don't get it.

British humour is alot more subtle while American humour is usually random and IN YOUR F**KING FACE
Not every single piece of humour that comes out of these countries is like that- America has alot of good shows that have subtle humour, but it is really rare for british humour to pull the OH SO RANDOM card.
Australia's humour is all over the place when compared with these two though. Australia's biggest problem is that they try to mix subtle and in your face humour together and end up with a whole lot of sh*t. But then again, some funny stuff does come out of it, but when it does it gets flogged more than a dead horse.
Anyone from Australia will agree with me about how much 'The Castle' gets shown on television.

I am planning to become a stand up comedian in the future, these posts have been relatively enlightening, thanks guys
